Get them started on the fundamentals of photography and composition with a photography course for kids. We help children learn the basics of creative photography in a fun and relaxed workshop.
At Bowens Creative Academy Junior, our simple message – compose, focus, and click – doesn’t just serve our young students well in their photography. Young people growing up in a fast-paced world need opportunities to develop their focus and composure, and our photography workshops for kids are the perfect way to build their creative skills alongside their confidence and character.
We place safeguarding as our top priority. All tutors and programme leaders must pass their safety standards screening and we put careful measures in place to ensure students safety.
What kids Learn
We run children’s photography workshops on a variety of topics year-round at amazing venues and museums throughout Kenya. Perfect for creative children who need some guidance in how to channel their ideas, this course could plant the seeds of a lifelong interest or even a budding career.
All our kids’ photography courses teach children about composition, the practical basics, and fun ways to explore their creativity. They’ll build their confidence in using their own camera (or they can hire a Nikon W100 from us) to produce photos worthy of a pro. We teach our students:
- The basics of camera mechanics
- The use of camera settings
- The fundamentals of composition
- How to apply fun effects
- How to take great photographs

Cost and Dates
Details
The course will be run in our studio. It comprises of 3 monthly workshops, and weekly photographic assignments.
For the first two workshops, tutor will take the students on a photo walk teaching the students how to use the exposure settings on their cameras to take great photographs. Each session is structured to support the students with their weekly photo skills assignments (provided to the students by the tutor), and the tutor will give students ideas on what to photograph and how to use their camera settings creatively.
Students will finish each session confidently understanding how to use the aperture, shutter speed and iso along with compositional skills to take inspiring photographs.
Instructions
- Student maximum numbers – 15 *Please note the weather dependent outdoor classes of the course will be run as a live workshop via zoom if the weather is poor on the day.
- Please remember to bring waterproof clothing and a rucksack for any personal possessions for outdoors weather dependent classes.
- The first workshop meets at our studio
- The second workshop meets at Karura Forest.
- The third workshop meets via zoom, link to be supplied. Students will spend the session viewing the images taken over the term and work together on any outstanding assignments.
Cost
Photography Course with own camera- Kes. 25,000 for 3 months and 3 holiday workshops. There will be weekly photographic assignment evaluated online and on weekend classes at our studio.
The Course 1st workshop will be at our studio, 2nd workshop at Karura Forest or any other chosen park and 3rd workshop on Zoom

Bespoke photography courses for children
If our learning dont dates work for your child, or if you have a group of children with particular interests, get in touch – we can design a bespoke photography course on the dates and topics that work for you.
Private photography tuition for children
For the young photographer who is keen to specialise, we also offer private tuition – if they can’t make our course dates, they don’t need to miss out. With one-to-one tuition they can focus on what they most enjoy photographing, and we’ll make sure we cover the skills they want to develop.
